It may have been a nail-biter, but the Flin Flon Bombers will live to see another day.
In what was a win-or-go-home road game for Flin Flon, the Bombers got a big 4-3 overtime win over the Notre Dame Hounds.
Donovan Houle-Villeneuve opened the scoring midway through the first period for the Bombers, with Rob Johnson adding another goal two minutes later. Jack Flaman answered back for Notre Dame in the second period, then scored again in the third to tie the game up.
Houle-Villeneuve then added another marker to give Flin Flon a 3-2 lead. However, the Hounds didn’t go down easy. Flaman scored once again on a late third period power play, finishing his hat trick and tying the game at 3.
Overtime was needed. The Bombers jumped out with some early momentum, getting four shots in less than four minutes. Finally, Brandson Hein capitalized on a pass from Chrystopher Collin 3:48 into the extra frame, ending the game and extending the Bombers’ playoffs.
Brenden Newton got a hard-fought 35-save win in the Bomber crease, while Notre Dame ‘tender Jack Ryan made 30 saves in a losing cause.
In the other SJHL wildcard series, Weyburn also forced a game three with Melville with a 2-0 win on the road. The two teams will play Wednesday night in Weyburn.
The Bomber win sets up a pivotal game three against the Hounds in Wilcox on Wednesday. The winner will go on to the next round of the SJHL playoffs, facing either Nipawin or Battlefords. The loser goes home.
